Topic: BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT
Ephesians 5:18 (KJV)
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
There are three major phases of our walk and experience with the Holy Spirit. First, you receive the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Second, you get filled with the Holy Spirit; and when you’re filled to the overflow, third, you get baptized in the Holy Spirit. All three experiences can happen at the same time, such as the case of the 120 disciples on the day of Pentecost.
There are many in the Body of Christ all over the world, who have equated speaking in tongues with baptism in the Holy Spirit. Such people have taught that once you receive the Holy Spirit and start speaking in tongues, it means you’re baptized in the Holy Spirit. No! That’s not what the Scriptures say. We will discuss baptism in the Holy Spirit in our next devotion.
Today, we’re admonished not to be drunk with wine, but rather be filled with the Spirit. When you receive the Holy Spirit, He comes to join Himself with your spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:17 (KJV) says, “…he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” The Holy Spirit is to be given the room and the right of way to fill you up from within. He doesn’t fill you up from the outside; He lives in you and fills you up from within. He is one with your spirit, but not one with your soul nor your body. However, while speaking in tongues and having communion with the Holy Spirit, He fills you up by “flooding” your soul and body with His Person and Presence. Your whole being and personality gets inundated with the Holy Spirit.
The proof that you’re filled with the Holy Spirit is that, you begin to speak to yourself; out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. You begin to sing and make melody in your heart to the Lord; you live a joyful life. Ephesians 5:19 (KJV) says, “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;” The more you do this, the more you get filled with the Spirit.
