Month Theme: Focus

Topic: Follow God’s leading

Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 8:1-10

Main Text:
1 Samuel 8:1
And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

Samuel forgot that he couldn’t just give the honour of leadership to anyone he chose. The prophet ignored the fact that he was operating through the grace of God. He was not the owner of the prophetic office but just a temporal occupant. If Samuel’s time was up, He who put him there, had enough potential leaders to replace him.

Confusion often arises in churches where leaders appoint their wives, nephews, children and friends to occupy sensitive positions without hearing from God. Nepotism, favouritism and partiality should not be employed where there is a calling for a specific office or position to be filled. The sons of Samuel could not deliver the goods. They had no ability to do the work. God did not call them and so He was under no obligation to supply the grace needed to accomplish the task.

The people accurately observed that Samuel was old (1 Samuel 8:5). They also rightly acknowledged that Samuel’s sons did not walk uprightly like he did. This was a fair appraisal of these “judges”. They correctly diagnosed the problem. God does not deny people the right to analyse the ills of their society. After such analyses however, the best thing to do is to pray for God’s way of solving the problem. These people presumptuously prescribed the way out.

Pray for grace to walk in the will of God and to follow His voice.
