Topic: FULFIL ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS
Matthew 3:13-15 (NKJV)
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”
But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
Our theme Scripture is a reference to the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the Jordan river. We have already established that the baptism of John the Baptist was a baptism of repentance. Although it was also by immersion, it was not the same as Christian baptism in water.
John the Baptist was a transitional prophet between the Old and New Testaments. He heralded the Christ and preached a message of repentance, calling on those who heard his word to repent and be ready for the Christ. Lo, and behold, Christ Himself came to John the Baptist, asking John to baptize Him. Since John’s Baptism was a baptism of repentance, Christ didn’t need to go through that baptism. Hebrews 4:15 (NKJV) says, “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Christ was in all points tempted as we are, yet He never yielded to a single temptation; He never sinned. This was the revelation John the Baptist had about Christ, and so felt unworthy to baptize Him.
Jesus’ Words to John the Baptist in the verse 15 of our theme Scripture, should serve as the reason and the motivation for all Christians to be baptized. Although John the Baptist didn’t understand why He should baptize a Man who didn’t need repentance, Jesus said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15, NKJV).
If you still haven’t found any reason to be baptized, after all that has been taught on Christian baptism in water, permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for you to fulfil all righteousness. When you don’t understand why you should obey God’s instruction, still do it to fulfil all righteousness. This should be our attitude as Christians.
