“GENRE OF MUSIC A CHRISTIAN SHOULD LISTEN TO”
SCRIPTURE READING: Philippians 4:8-9
Many Christians are carried away by all kinds of music because of the language and communicative elements deployed in the music which appears real and natural.
The confusion out there is as to whether or not a Christian should listen to any genre of music? Today, we will deal with this confusion, because as Christians we need to understand the impact of music on character formation and how we can choose the right music for its positive effect on the individual.
All genre of music should be viewed with the spectacle of Philippians 4:8. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. We should always understand that our hearts are filled with things we see and hear. The Christian should always test or examine any kind of music (from classical to contemporary, be it rock, rap, reggae, pop, etc.) we hear.
• We should examine: The message of the song: what message is the song carrying?
• The purpose of the song: what is the original intention of the composer? What behaviour is the composer promoting?
• The association of the song: what comes to mind when the song is being played? Does it urge you to pray? Does it challenge you to be responsible? Does it increase your sexual urge? etc.
• The emotions the music brings: Does the music stir your negative or sinful feelings? For instance, some music can increase your taste for alcohol, smoking, violence, etc.
In conclusion, Apostle Paul is teaching us that, whatever genre of music we enjoy should be tested whether the message of the song is biblically true, whether the purpose of the song is noble, whether the song positions your heart on things which are right and pure, lovely and admirable, excellent and praiseworthy.
Father, I connect my spiritual antenna to your spirit, cause me to choose the right kinds of music at any time and at anywhere. Amen.
