Month Theme: Giving and Receiving

Topic: Give Your Life

Scripture Reading:

2 Corinthians 8:1-10; Philippians 4:10-23

Main Text:

2 Corinthians 8:5

And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.

Giving our lives to God and others must precede giving material things (Romans 12:1).

The Macedonians gave themselves to God and the apostles first and followed that with their resources. This point is vital if we are to give in the Spirit and not in the flesh. Giving is a holistic endeavour. We should not isolate the giving of spiritual things to God from the giving of material things.

It is easier to give your money to God than your life. Those who are not capable of giving their lives to God find it difficult to give material things to Him and the work of the ministry. If you surrender your life completely to God, it is easier to give material things to Him. Jesus Christ taught that we should not place undue emphasis on material things. If you give your life to God, you will not withhold material things from Him. A man’s life is more valuable than material possessions (Luke 12:15).

The Macedonian example has a lot to teach on giving and receiving. They gave to the apostle Paul who himself was a giver. He worked to earn money and shared it with the ministers who accompanied him to preach around the world. Apart from the money and material things Paul shared with his team, he also shared the Word of God with the Macedonian believers. These acts of generosity qualified the apostle to receive from others especially the Macedonians (the Philippians).

Pray for the grace to fully give to God and man; to give your life.
