Month Theme: Focus
Topic: God is the ultimate Ruler
Scripture Reading: Judges 8:22-32
Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.
Gideon knew that the ruler must be the one who gives the victory. No one qualifies for this high office except the Lord. God, as Ruler, may however, designate someone to act on His behalf as a leader. Such a person must hear from God and not men.
When people entice you to usurp authority, do not yield to them. Quite often they will tell you that you are too great to serve under someone else. They encourage you to break away from the church. They volunteer to go with you and become members of your new church. We must never yield to this kind of pressure, the pressure that cries out, “rule over us”. It is God who makes people pastors and leaders. It is disastrous when church members shower so much “praise” on a man of God to his peril. They depend on him to the point where their faith in God almost dies.
When we treat our leaders this way, they are tempted to have an exaggerated opinion of themselves. They begin to feel that no one can correct them. They demand undue respect and reward from God’s people. I once heard that a man of God told his flock he was the only one who could solve their problems. This is self-deification which is exploitative and manipulative.
Prayer: Pray for the leader God has put over you that he’ll not succumb to pressure and exalt himself unduly.
