Month Theme: Focus
Topic: Golden Earrings
Scripture Reading: Exodus 32:1-15
And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
Today’s believers possess earrings in the form of ideas, traditions, doctrines and attitudes which they carry over into the church from Egypt (the world). When their faith in the Word does not produce the instant results they expect, they pressure their pastors to try some of the ideas that they brought from the world. Some believers resort to occultism in times of trial. Others go back to habits and relationships they abandoned when they were converted.
Leaders are often compelled to institutionalise idolatry by giving to the people things the leaders know cannot save them. They have to create dummies for them whether these things work or not. The people want something to believe in, so the leaders indulge them. These idols could also be certain modes of worship which have a form of godliness, but lack power (2 Timothy 3:5-7). Golden calves are the man-made things we do without the Spirit just to make our churches look superior to others.
Anything a leader does just to console or accommodate people is an idol. Many churches are filled with these idols. For example, prayer meetings are held just to keep people from crossing over to another church. Conventions are held because of insecurity. A church desiring to be of equal standing with a bigger church adds the word “international” to its name. These things are not bad in themselves, but if they are done out of fear, they become idols. Leaders must not be pushed to make idols in the church. Let God be God.
Pray and ask the Holy Ghost to help you take out of your heart and mind, anything that has become an idol in your life.
