Topic: Hobson’s Choice and “Disobedience”

Scripture Reading:

Genesis 2:10-27; Luke 11:21-26

Main Text:

Luke 11:24
24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith,I will return unto my house whence I came out.

As mentioned yesterday, Hobson’s choice is the choice between taking what we are offered and getting nothing at all. Hobson’s choice is a common scenario in the Bible. In the book of Genesis, God gave man the privilege of staying in the Garden of Eden and dressing it. He gave him the option of freely eating any fruit in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:15-17).

The situation in the Garden of Eden made it look as if Adam could partake of any fruit but the consequence of eating the fruit of one of the trees was so devastating that it was not an option. After eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, God drove him out of the Garden of Eden. His freedom was not absolute after all. The case was Hobson’s choice.

The positions and privileges God gives believers are dependent on their ability to obey the rules He attaches to them. God in His love gives human beings the freewill to make choices. The price we pay for some of the choices are however, so dear that they are no options at all. Choices that lead to spiritual or physical death are no choices.

1. Pray for the grace to clearly discern God’s Word for you, so as not to deviate from it to the left or right.
2. Pray also that the Holy Ghost will order your steps in the choices you make.
