Theme: The Relevant Church
Topic: Our Response to Soul Winning I
Scripture Reading:2 Peter 3:1-18
Main Text2 Peter 3:17-18
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
It is one thing knowing about soul winning, and another, engaging in it. Many believers feel remorseful, emotional, and energised after hearing messages on soul winning but relapse into a state of indifference after a few hours. Others shy away from, or are afraid to engage in soul winning, altogether. This is sometimes because our response to the message of soul winning is usually wrong.
Our first response should be “self-repentance”. The message should impact us first before others, else we will turn out to be hypocrites – first remove the beam in your eye (Matthew 7:5). We must go beyond the emotionalism to a place of true repentance. One needs to have the capacity to support himself or herself to be able to support another. We cannot give what we do not have.
Repentance gives us the confidence to preach to others. Imagine how difficult it will be for a person to preach in a neighbourhood he or she went to fornicate in the previous night. Such acts only make a mockery of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 6:4-6). It is unprofitable to try to show others the right way, while we are headed the wrong way. We must put our bodies into subjection, so that we do not become castaways after we have preached to others (1 Corinthians 9:27).
Prayer:1. Pray for the humility to look into yourself and repent when you err.
2. Pray for the grace to be steadfast in Christ as you seek to win others to Christ.
