Theme: Purpose

Topic: Preach the Gospel to the Poor

Scripture Reading:
Matthew 23:1-12; Luke 4:1-19

Main Text:
Luke 4:18
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

In the English language, the word Gospel is obtained from two words – good and spell (spell is an old word meaning narration, message or speech). A gospel is therefore a good message. The Gospel is the news of the coming of the Kingdom of God. The apostle Paul revealed the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the good news of the death of Jesus Christ on the cross and His resurrection to reconcile lost humankind to God (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

Jesus Christ knew the purpose of the Holy Ghost in His life. He did not misdirect the power of the Holy Ghost but applied it in preaching the Gospel to the poor. The Pharisees and other religious leaders paraded themselves as untouchable representatives of God. While doing this they failed to save the lost and deliver the captives. They rather heaped laws upon the people and pushed salvation and deliverance beyond their reach. Religion today, has its equivalents of the scribes and Pharisees. Church leaders sit on huge chairs and enjoy the flowery praises of men.

Instead of joining the prestigious religious leaders of the day to burden the people with laws and the traditions of men, Jesus Christ preached the good news of freedom to the poor. He did not align Himself with affluent individuals to suppress the vulnerable, but mingled with the poor and preached the Gospel of the Kingdom
of God to them.

1. Pray for a heart of compassion for the poor.
2. Pray also for the grace to lighten the burden of the poor.
