Theme: Financial Faithfulness

Topic: Rebuking the Devourer

Scripture Reading:
Malachi 3:8-12

Main Text
Malachi 3:11
And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.

Open heaven blessings generate various forms of demonic attacks and resistance. God promised the people of Israel that in the event of such attacks, He would rebuke the devourer for their sakes (Malachi 3:11). To rebuke is to chide, scold. God makes it His business to scold the enemy on the behalf of tithers.

The devourers in Bible times were locusts, caterpillars, cankerworms and palmerworms that attacked the people’s crops. The Bible also uses these organisms to describe the armies of heathen nations that attacked Israel and carried their people into captivity. Today, we have many devourers like those who use witchcraft and human manipulation to destroy God’s people. Internet fraud, identity theft and armed robbery are the activities of devourers.

New Testament saints have no problem whatsoever believing that God rebukes the devourer for their sakes. If we believe that God rebukes the devourer for our sakes, we should practise the conditions God sets for rebuking the devourer. In this case, the condition is to bring in the tithes and offerings. The Lord’s model prayer, which we pray is proof that deliverance from evil is a New Testament blessing. This model prayer tells us to ask God not to lead us into temptation and to deliver us from evil. God delivers us from the spiritual activities of devourers like demons and evil people.

1. Pray that the Lord will rebuke every devourer that targets you.
2. Pray also that God will order your steps and deliver you from evil.
