John 7:37-39 (KJV)

[37] In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. [38] He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. [39] (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given ; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

We saw in yesterday’s devotion, that, when one is baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire, he/she carries fuel of fire; the Holy Spirit flows from within that individual as fuel of fire.

Our theme Scripture reveals another dimension of the operations of the Holy Spirit from within us; Jesus predicted that, the mission of the Holy Spirit, is to flow from within us as rivers of living water. The name, “rivers of living water” is suggestive; it implies the Holy Spirit deposits and imparts life wherever the rivers flow.

This makes the work of the Holy Spirit in us, and through us, very intriguing. Depending on what we’re confronted with, and what we’re dealing with at any given time, the Holy Spirit will either manifest Himself through us as fuel of fire to burn, and to consume all that is not of God, or, He will manifest Himself as rivers of living water to impart life, and revive that which God has done, and is doing in the lives of His people.

This is exactly what is portrayed in Exodus 23:22,25-26 (KJV):

“[22] But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. [25] And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee. [26] There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.”

In one breadth, the Holy Spirit is an enemy to our enemies; He manifests Himself as fuel of fire to consume such enemies. In another breadth, He is a blessing to us; He manifests Himself as rivers of living water, making us fulfilled in all we do. What a blessing it is, to have the Holy Spirit in us, and at work in us!
