Topic: Someone Else is Doing It

Scripture Reading: John 3:27-30

Main Text:

John 3:26

And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

We have always been here and no one else should co-exist with us”. “This is our field and no one else can do it like we do it”. “We are the most powerful church in town and nobody should do better than us”. These are some of the poisonous words followers keep forcing into the ears of their leaders. Such words produce insecurity in a leader. They pressure him to suppress everyone else. They cause unrest in his soul. He must do something to stop these people who are trying to break up his monopoly.

John the Baptist faced this kind of pressure. He was the pioneer of New Testament water baptism. Multitudes went to him to be baptised including Jesus. John the Baptist made headlines. He shook the religious leaders of his day. His disciples were definitely proud to be associated with him.

However, at one point in the ministry of Jesus, His disciples, under His supervision, baptised more converts than John (John 4:1-2). John’s disciples were threatened by Jesus’ success. John’s disciples were scared. Their monopoly in the area of baptism had been broken. Someone else was doing it and attracting more followers. They wanted John to do something about it.

Prayer: Pray for the humility to resist the temptation of envy.
