When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
God sometimes uses physical things as the means of transmitting His power. The physical objects may be used just once and no more. For instance, Jesus used saliva and soil to anoint and heal a blind man but He did not always resort to that method (John 9:5-7). The reason for the use of symbols and tokens in the ministration of the Spirit, is that human beings relate better to things they see and touch. God in preparing spiritual things for us takes our human limitations into consideration. You cannot read your Bible without seeing clearly that God sometimes uses physical objects to transmit His power.
There are extremists who see the anointing oil as the Holy Ghost. Such people do not believe that the Holy Ghost is at work until they see a bottle of oil. They even sometimes drink copious quantities of the anointing oil to cure internal ailments. Whereas this might not constitute an unscriptural practice, we should not make drinking oil a practice. Hygienic and health reasons may not make it advisable to drink the anointing oil.
The anointing oil is not synonymous with the Holy Ghost. However, when it is taken from common use and assigned to spiritual purposes, it becomes a medium for the transmission of spiritual power. The presence of the Holy Ghost in a place and the working of the Holy Ghost in the life of the person carrying the oil, allow the oil to be used by God as an instrument of power.Take note of “the presence of the Holy Ghost in a place”. Great error arises when we don’t focus on the person of the Holy Ghost. People who give extreme attention to the anointing oil may neglect fellowship with the Holy Ghost and the study of God’s Word.
Prayer: Pray that the Holy Ghost will quicken you to be more sensitive to His presence.
