Topic: THE BROKEN BODY OF JESUS
1 Corinthians 11:23-24 (NKJV)
For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
It’s interesting to know that when the Lord’s Supper was instituted, Apostle Paul wasn’t a disciple of Jesus at the time, and he wasn’t physically present with Jesus and His disciples (Luke 22:7-20). Apostle Paul says he received the very Words of Jesus by revelation; it was the Lord Himself who gave it to him by revelation.
Does that not speak volumes, as to the importance Jesus attaches to this New Testament practice? If it wasn’t that important, would the Lord reveal it to Apostle Paul to be delivered to His Church? Oh, that Church will wake up to this all important revelation!
The Lord Jesus would want the Church to practice exactly what He did when He instituted the Lord’s Supper: He took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Jesus wants every member of His Body to partake of the Lord’s Supper in remembrance of Him. We’re commanded to do it! If you’re commanded to do something and you don’t do it; if you’re given a revelation by the Lord Jesus but you refuse to abide by it, is that not disobedience? Herein lies the test of our obedience!
What are we to remember whenever we eat the broken Body of Jesus? We’re to remember that Jesus is our Passover Lamb; He took our place, that we might take His place. We’re to remember that His Body was broken, so that we might enjoy soundness and wholeness in our physical bodies. We’re to remember that Christ was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).
It is only when we eat what Christ says we should eat that these benefits become ours. Failure to do so, is to our own detriment. He that has an ear, let him hear what Christ says to His Church!
