Month Theme: The Anointing
Topic: The Simplicity of the Anointing
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 4:1-13
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Some believers blessed by God to move in the anointing complicate things with too many add-on gimmicks just for extra publicity. Human effort and fleshly wisdom are mixed with a genuine anointing and the result is presented as the anointing. A casual look at such people can easily discourage the average believer from moving in the anointing. Some “anointed people” claim they paid a great price for the anointing in terms of fasting, prayer, holiness and sacrificial living, making it look inaccessible to others.
We should not overemphasise the little effort we make to pursue God and the things of God. The anointing, like the Word of God, is God’s gift to believers. A spiritual gift should not be complex. The Word of God is simple enough to be handled by every born-again, Spirit-filled and obedient person. Handling the anointing is as simple as handling the Word of God. The Greeks had various types of swords. Some were sharp only on one edge and were not pointed at the tip. Others were long and heavy thus rendering them difficult to carry and could not be handled by just anybody.
The writer of Hebrews did not compare the Word of God with any of the above. He likened the Word of God to the sword called the ‘machaira’ in the Greek language, which is a two-edged sword (Hebrew 4:12). It has a pointed tip, is sharp on both edges and is also light. You don’t have to be strong or extra skilful to handle the ‘machaira’. Revelation knowledge does not belong to spiritual sages, but to everyone who has the Spirit of God in him or her. The Word of God is not restricted to heavenly realms or the deepest part of the earth. It is in your spirit, close to your mouth and ready to be released (Romans 10:6).
Prayer: Pray for the boldness to operate in the anointing.
