Month Theme: For This Purpose

Topic: The Spirit of Counsel

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:38-48

Main Text:

Isaiah 11:2

And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;

Counsel is advice. With counsel, you achieve the purpose of Jesus Christ for the Church. Counsel is impartation of wisdom. Counsel is wisdom in distribution. Sharing is the principle here. Selfishness should not be found under the anointing of the Holy Ghost. The wisdom of the Holy Ghost is for the edification of the entire Body of Christ.

The Spirit of counsel gives instruction and direction to others to save them, enable them obtain results and become victorious in their battles. Those who are on the receiving end of counsel should be humble enough to receive it without feeling belittled. Jesus Christ demonstrated the Spirit of counsel when He directed those who were being oppressed to turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:38-42). This counsel sounded foolish to the natural person but in the Spirit, it was a powerful tool to overcome oppression. He came to set the captives free but He did so without provoking an insurrection of the Jews against the Romans.

Spiritual counsel is diametrically opposed to earthly counsel. It does not appeal to the senses but it is very powerful. The natural person cannot receive the Spirit of counsel because it is foolishness to him or her. The virtues under consideration are the empowering agents of the anointing. If they are absent the anointing cannot serve its purpose.

Prayer: Pray for the grace to properly share, with others, the wisdom God has put into you.
