Theme: Purpose

Topic: The Spirit of the Lord

Scripture Reading:
Isaiah 11:1-2; Luke 4:1-19

Main Text:
Isaiah 11:2
2  And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

The Spirit of the LORD resting on believers typifies the lordship of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Ghost over our lives. We don’t struggle with the devil, world or our flesh because the Spirit of the LORD rests on us. He has absolute power over us and everything around us. In Isaiah 11:2, the previous six characteristics of the Spirit of God paved way for the Spirit of the LORD to come upon the Messiah. This power of the Holy Ghost is what most people want without having the other virtues within them. The Spirit of the LORD is the climax of spiritual empowerment and the apex of divine glory.

Without the fear of the LORD, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, counsel and might, we cannot have the power of the LORD resting upon us. Luke 4:18 shows that when the Spirit of the LORD rested upon Jesus Christ, He was empowered to preach, heal the broken-hearted, set captives free and heal the sick. This was because He possessed all the other six character traits of the Holy Ghost as we saw early on. Jesus Christ cast out demons and raised the dead by the Spirit of the LORD because the fear of the LORD was in His heart.

God’s seven-fold Spirit upon you means that your frail nature is carrying the divinity of God. The omnipotence of the Holy Ghost resides in you and rests upon you. It is a mystery that this powerful influence does not crush you. If an elephant “rests upon” a rabbit, the former would crush the latter. The Holy Ghost “rests upon” you but does not crush you. Instead, He empowers you to preach the Gospel but crushes the devil around you.

1. Pray that the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon you and crush anything that has the tendency of making you stray from the purpose of God for your life.
2. Pray also that you will be very sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Ghost to operate as He leads.
