Month Theme: For This Purpose
Topic: The Urgency of Preaching
Scripture Reading: Matthew 28:10-20
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.
Jesus Christ attached so much urgency to the task of preaching the Gospel that He did not wait for those who needed it to come to Him – He took the Gospel to them (Matthew 9:35). He went to cities and villages teaching and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom and healing sicknesses. He did not go only to the cities but also to the villages. Preachers must not exclude some places from their targets because they are too big or small – cities and villages must all be included. Jesus Christ commanded His disciples in the great commission to go to the world with the Gospel (Matthew 28:18-20). He did not tell them to wait for people to come to them. The great commission is a “go ye therefore” commission, not a “wait for them to come” one.
We must preach the Gospel in season and out of season. The Gospel is not a seasonal Gospel – it must be preached in all seasons. The Gospel is not a sectional Gospel – it must be preached to all people. The Gospel is not a sensational Gospel – its preaching is not always accompanied by spectacular events. Sensational preaching of the Gospel uses gimmicks to attract people’s curiosity by pretentious miracles and hyped activities. People no longer endure sound doctrine (2 Timothy 4:1-4). Even the believers in the Church are opposed to the preaching of the Gospel. They think the Gospel is too simple to deliver them from the forces of darkness that confront them. Newer but misleading doctrines are constantly plunging us into deeper levels of bondage and hopelessness. There is no better avenue of deliverance than the simple Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Believers must not wait for perfect conditions to preach the Gospel. The world is repulsing and rejecting the Gospel more and more and we must be more aggressive and audacious in our approach to preaching. Strict laws are being enforced in various communities that are putting shackles around the feet of preachers of the Gospel but giving advantage to other religions and the doctrines of devils.
Prayer: Pray for yourself and the Church, that the urgency of the Gospel will be ablaze in our hearts.
