Matthew 8:8-10 (KJV)

[8] The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. [9] For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man , Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it . [10] When Jesus heard it , he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

We discovered in our previous devotion, that, the Word of God is a vehicle which conveys the power of God. The anointing flows in the direction of our words, particularly when we speak the faith-filled words.

Our theme Scripture narrates a story about a centurion who besought Jesus to heal his servant. Jesus told him to go, and that He would come and heal the servant. But the centurion demonstrated a particular kind of faith which Jesus said He hadn’t ever seen in Israel. The centurion believed that Jesus didn’t need to come to his house to pray for his servant before the servant would be healed; all he wanted was for Jesus to speak the Word only!

Jesus’ remarks after the insistence of the centurion to speak the Word only, reveal that, faith in the Word of God, independent of any external medium, is the greatest faith. If that is the greatest faith, then, the Word of God is the greatest medium which serves as a vehicle to express the anointing. You see, we’re all not at the same level of faith; some have little faith, while others have great faith. Those who have little faith can grow their faith through the continuous exercise of their faith in the Word of God. Such folks often depend on external medium which their senses can relate to, before they can effectively exercise their faith. They will need media such as, oil, water, handkerchiefs, aprons, just to name a few, before their faith can come alive. And there’s nothing wrong with the use of external medium which our senses can relate to; those with little faith need to start from this level. But as we grow, God will require of us to begin to exercise great faith, by trusting the Word of God as the greatest medium to express the anointing of God from within us.

Remember, where the word of a king is, there is power! The centurion believed that, if Jesus spoke, the power of God will flow through Jesus’ Words to go and heal his servant; that was why he didn’t see the need for Jesus to visit his home and lay hands on his servant. How many of us have this kind of faith? How many of us have come to the level of depending on the Word of God as the greatest medium to express the anointing? That is where God would want the Church to get to, but since we’re not all at the same level of faith, from time to time, we will use one medium or the other to help those with little faith. But I prophesy, that, a day will come when the Church will be full of people who have grown their faith to great faith; people who will depend on the Word of God as the greatest medium to express the anointing. It shall come to pass!
