SCRIPTURE READING: Ephesians 5:18-20

The scripture clearly teaches about the uses of songs in our everyday lives. Paul was teaching that we could speak to one another (fellow believers/ saints/) in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Paul further admonishes us to sing and make melody/ music in our hearts to the Lord.

The teaching of Paul regarding how we ought to sing to the Lord is substantiated by Moses in Exodus 15: 1-2 when Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:

I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted, the horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God and I will exalt Him. Hallelujah (Exodus 15:1, 2 NIV).

Paul again instructs us to speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the spirit. Here we understand that we should communicate with one another through singing. In other words, you should know that anytime you sing, you are communicating to someone.

Communication is very important in our daily lives. Communication can create a peaceful environment; it can as well create violent or chaotic environment. Apostle Paul admonishes us not to be under the influence of wine, rather we should be influenced or filled with the Spirit.

One way by which we can be filled with the spirit is by communicating with one another through Psalms, hymns, or spiritual song. Technically, a Psalm can be thought of as a scripture set to music and it is usually from the Book of Psalms.

A spiritual song can be any song with a spiritual theme, including song of testimony and admonition.

A hymn addresses and celebrates God and has the purpose of praise and adoration. Hymns are valuable aids to worship because they help to focus our attention on the goodness and glory of the Lord. A Hymn could be a song of praise.

Father, help me develop the habit of singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs so I can always be filled with your Spirit. Amen.
