Topic: WHEN IS ONE BAPTIZED IN THE HOLY SPIRIT?
Acts 1:4-5 (KJV)
And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
The above Scripture is a reference to a command Jesus gave His disciples before He ascended to heaven. The Greek word translated “baptized” also means, “to dip into” or “to immerse.” Jesus told them they were going to be immersed in the Holy Spirit not many days after His ascension.
We have discovered in previous devotions that one needs to receive the Holy Spirit after he/she is born again. We’ve also discovered that the Holy Spirit doesn’t fill us from the outside; He lives in us and therefore fills us from within. So, when is one said to be baptized in the Holy Spirit?
Remember, your spirit is joined to the Holy Spirit when you receive Him; you become one spirit with the Holy Spirit. But the fact that the Holy Spirit is one with your spirit doesn’t mean He has automatic control over your soul. Your soul is made up of your mind, will and emotions. The uniqueness of mankind is in our soul; the ability to take decisions and make choices as free moral agents, is what makes the human creation unique. Hence, until the individual believer who has received the Holy Spirit submits his/her will to the Will of God and yields his/her soul under the control and influence of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit may never have free access to work through such an individual.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit is all about complete and total surrender of the human soul to the influence of the Holy Spirit in us. Therefore, one is said to be baptized in the Holy Spirit when the Holy Spirit has filled that individual to the overflow; when the Holy Spirit has gained the preeminence or right of way in the life of that individual; when the Holy Spirit has taken over the soul of the individual; when it is no longer the will of the individual, but God’s Will being done through that individual.
